When an unsecured loan is the right product

An unsecured personal loan is the default choice when the amount is under £25,000, you want a fixed term, and you do not want — or cannot offer — a charge on a property. Renters have no other mainstream option. Homeowners have a choice, and the choice is about price and risk, not about whether the loan is possible.

Because there is no security, the lender prices the person, not the house. Clean credit and stable income get the representative rates you see advertised. Anything less moves you up the price ladder quickly, which is why a soft-search check before a hard application matters more here than on a secured product.

Unsecured versus the alternatives

ProductTypical rangeHome at risk?
Unsecured personal loan£1,000–£25,000 · 1–7 yearsNo
Credit card / 0% dealRevolving · promo 12–34 monthsNo
Secured loan£10,000–£2,000,000 · 3–30 yearsYes

If you own a home and need more than about £25,000, or you need a longer term to keep the monthly payment bearable, a secured loan is usually cheaper. It is also the product that puts the house on the line. That trade-off should be a conscious choice, not a default.

What lenders check

  • Credit file — missed payments, defaults, CCJs, the number of recent searches, and utilisation on existing cards.
  • Income and employment — employed, self-employed and some benefit income are all placeable; the evidence required differs.
  • Existing commitments — the new payment plus what you already pay has to fit. This is why two people on the same salary get different offers.
  • Address history — electoral roll at the current address helps. A thin file is a different problem from a damaged one.

Applying to three high-street lenders in a week, getting declined, and then coming to a specialist is the expensive order. Each hard decline is a search on the file. Soft-search first, then apply once.

Common questions

What is an unsecured loan?

A personal loan with no charge over your home or any other asset. If you miss repayments the lender can pursue the debt through the courts and it will damage your credit file, but they cannot repossess your property on the back of this loan alone.

How much can I borrow unsecured?

Typically £1,000–£25,000, over one to seven years. A handful of lenders go higher for clean-credit applicants, but above £25,000 a secured loan is usually cheaper if you own a home. Renters are limited to the unsecured market.

Will checking eligibility affect my credit score?

No. The initial check is a soft search. A hard search happens only when you formally apply with a chosen lender, and that is flagged before it does.

Can renters get an unsecured loan?

Yes. Unsecured loans do not need a property. Lenders still want a UK address, a UK bank account, regular income and a credit file they can read. Living with family is accepted by some lenders and declined by others.

Can I get an unsecured loan with bad credit?

Sometimes, for smaller amounts. Adverse credit pushes rates up and caps shrink — often £5,000–£15,000 rather than £25,000. If you own a home, a secured loan is usually the more realistic route once the unsecured price becomes punitive. See our bad credit loans page.

Is an unsecured loan cheaper than a credit card?

Usually, if you already know the amount and the term. A 0% purchase or balance-transfer card can be cheaper for a short, disciplined payoff. An unsecured loan is the better tool when the promotional period would not be long enough, or when you want a fixed payment and an end date.
