How do I choose a broadband deal?

Start with what's actually available at your address, then compare the speeds providers expect you to get, the total cost over the minimum contract and any set-up fees. Check how prices can rise during the contract — since January 2025 providers must show any mid-contract rises in pounds and pence when you sign up.

  • Availability depends on your exact address
  • Compare total cost over the full contract
  • Price rises must be shown in pounds and pence
  • Switching is usually handled by the new provider

Types of broadband

Most UK homes can get part-fibre broadband (fibre to the cabinet, with copper to your home). Full fibre runs fibre all the way to the property and offers much higher, more consistent speeds where it's available. Cable broadband is available in some areas, and 4G or 5G home broadband can be an option where fixed lines are slow.

What to compare

  • Expected speed at your address, not just the headline speed
  • Monthly price and total cost over the minimum term
  • How and when the price can rise during the contract
  • Set-up, router and installation fees
  • Contract length — commonly 12 to 24 months

Switching provider

Under Ofcom's One Touch Switch process, you usually only need to contact the provider you're moving to, and they arrange the switch. If you leave before your minimum term ends you may have to pay early exit fees, so check your current contract first.

Mobile and SIM-only deals

If you already own your phone, a SIM-only plan is often cheaper than a contract that includes a handset. Phones sold in the UK can no longer be locked to a network, which makes it easier to switch when your contract ends. You can switch mobile provider by texting your current provider to get a switching code.

Help if you're on a low income

Many providers offer social tariffs — cheaper broadband for people receiving certain benefits such as Universal Credit. Ofcom publishes a list of available social tariffs.

Common questions

Do I need to contact my old broadband provider to switch?

Usually not. With One Touch Switch, your new provider arranges the switch and the cancellation of your old service. Check whether you'll pay early exit fees first.

Why is my speed lower than advertised?

Advertised speeds are averages. Your actual speed depends on your line, the distance to the exchange or cabinet, your router and wiring, and how many devices are using it.

What is full fibre?

Broadband delivered by fibre-optic cable all the way to your home, rather than over copper for the last part. It's typically faster and more reliable where available.

Can my broadband price go up during my contract?

It can if the contract allows. Since January 2025, Ofcom rules require providers to set out any mid-contract price rises in pounds and pence at the point of sale.

What is a social tariff?

A cheaper broadband or phone package for people on certain benefits. Eligibility and prices vary by provider.
